Jasper Park Lodge celebrates 75 years of
The Grand Canadian Golf Experience! Jasper Park Lodge, deep in the
heart of the Canadian Rockies, is the setting of unforgettable
memories for thousands of golfers since the course opening in
1925. That summer, after a grueling year of planning and
preparation -- it had taken 50 teams of horses and 200 men to
clear the land of boulders and debris -- Jasper Park Lodge's award
winning golf course was ready to play. On July 17, 1925, Earl Haig,
Commander in Chief of the British forces in World War I and a
former Captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews,
officially opened the golf course.
Stanley Thompson, master golf course
architect, displayed some of the finest work of his career with
this design. The 18 hole layout offered elevated tee boxes,
bunkers patterned after the snow formation on the mountains and
holes aligned with distant mountain vistas. He built wide fairways
carved from thick forest, and was always conscious of the
environment's natural contours, blending beautiful landscapes with
challenging terrain. As a result, few golf courses in the world
can match the rugged majesty of the Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course.
In 1994, using Thompson's original
course blueprints, the Jasper Park Lodge undertook to renovate the
course back to its original layout. Some bunkers were reshaped,
others were opened again. New stand has been placed in all course
bunkers. Tee boxes have been reshaped and in some instances built
up to their original height. The course has been rated the best
resort course in Canada by Canada's Score Magazine and was one of
only 10 golf resorts in the world to receive a Gold Medal from
Golf Magazine.
Today, this award winning course remains
one of the "must play" courses in Canada: a true classic
that combines the best of what golf is all about -- a love of the
history and the game itself. We invite you to celebrate the 75th
anniversary of this masterpiece.
